A Message from My Heart
A Message from My Heart Superintendent Nisha Patel, EdD, announced her plans to retire at the end of the school year. Read her letter to the Clayton community, “A Message From My Heart,” below, and learn more about the Board of Education’s search for the District’s next superintendent . As I begin to write this letter, I find myself sitting with more emotions than I know how to put into words. I have started and stopped several times, wondering how you possibly say enough when you are trying to describe one of the greatest loves and privileges of your life. But I will do my best. And first, thank you for taking the time to read what I know is a lengthy letter. Many of you know that my life was built on a belief I hold as deeply today as I did as a child: education changes lives. It is the reason my family left Kenya and came to this amazing country. We came believing education could open doors that otherwise may never have existed. Growing up, one of my birthday gifts each year from my parents was a trip to the bookstore, where I could choose a book of my own. To me, books were never just books. They were windows into a world I had not yet seen. They allowed me to dream about places I had never been and a life I could not yet imagine. Reading opened the world to us, and education gave us hope that we could one day be part of that world in ways we had only dreamed of. When I arrived in the United States and walked into a school as a sixth grader, I could not have known that education would become my life's work. But from that very first day until this moment, I have loved school. I love the sound of students filling hallways. I love the excitement of the first day of school and the moment a student realizes, I can do this. I love watching students discover who they are and begin to understand who they might become. Where else do you find a place that embraces you for exactly who you are while also challenging you to become more? A place that pushes you, on a field, on a stage, or in a classroom, and sometimes reminds you, before you believe it yourself, that you are capable of more. That is what school has always meant to me. And that is why writing the next part of this letter is so incredibly difficult. With a heart that is full, grateful, and, if I am being honest, very heavy, I want to share that this will be my final year as your superintendent of the School District of Clayton as I have decided to retire. Perhaps the hardest part of this decision is that I am not leaving because I have fallen out of love with what I do. In fact, I believe I am more in love with this work today than I have ever been. I still wake up excited to come to work. I still believe, with every part of me, in the power of what happens inside our schools. And I still walk through our buildings feeling incredibly lucky that this is my life, and that I get to spend my days with people who have dedicated themselves to children and to the future. When it came to making this decision, I found myself returning to the same questions again and again: Why now? Why step away when I still love this work so deeply and when there is so much momentum, possibility and good work ahead? My answer is simple, even if the decision itself has not been. Sometimes, the right time for an organization to embrace new leadership is when it is strong. When it is thriving. When there is momentum. When the foundation is solid and the future is filled with possibility. And I believe that is where Clayton is today. My six years as your superintendent have gone by faster than I ever imagined. There have been moments of great joy and extraordinary challenge, celebrations, difficult decisions, long nights, laughter, uncertainty and pride. Through all of it, there has been one constant: the incredible people who make this District what it is. Together, we have accomplished so much. But the accomplishments alone are not what I will carry with me. I will carry the faces. The students who made me laugh, challenged me and reminded me time and time again why this work matters. I will carry their excitement, their questions, their hopes and the privilege of watching them discover who they are and who they might become. I will carry the conversations, laughter, challenges and countless moments shared with staff members who give so much of themselves every single day. I have such deep respect and admiration for the way you show up for our students, for one another and for this community, often giving far more of yourselves than anyone will ever fully know. You have been there through the celebrations and the difficult days. You have challenged me, supported me and made me a better leader and person. I hope you know how much you have meant to me and how grateful I am to have spent these years alongside you. I will carry the trust of our families, who place the most precious people in their lives in our hands each day. I have never taken that responsibility lightly. Thank you for celebrating with us, challenging us, asking us to do better and standing beside us. Your love for your children and your belief in what is possible for them are at the heart of what makes Clayton so special. I will carry the partnership and support of our Board of Education. We are truly blessed to have leaders who care so deeply about our students, our staff, our families and the future of this District. Your unwavering commitment to Clayton, your willingness to ask the difficult questions and your ability to remain focused on what is best for our students have been extraordinary. You have supported me, challenged me, trusted me and stood beside me through some of the most significant moments of my career. I will forever be grateful for the opportunity to have worked alongside each of you and for the trust you placed in me to lead this remarkable District. Clayton is not just a school district to me. It has become part of my heart. And while that makes this decision incredibly difficult, I also believe it is the right time because, in so many ways, things could not feel more right. I have always believed that my role as your Superintendent is to lead for the future of this organization, not for the duration of my tenure. My hope is that the decisions I made have positioned our District to thrive well beyond my time in this role. I am proud of where we are. I am hopeful about where we are going. And I believe, with my whole heart, that the future of the School District of Clayton is incredibly bright. But before that next chapter comes, we still have this year. And I want us to make it count. There is still so much ahead. So much to celebrate. So much to build. And so much joy to experience together. I promise you this: I will continue to give this District every ounce of my heart, energy and commitment through my final day. For one more year, I get to walk these hallways as your grateful superintendent. One more year of watching our students grow, celebrating their victories and supporting them through their challenges. One more year of working alongside extraordinary staff, families and a community I love. And I intend to treasure every single moment. Together, we will continue making Clayton a place for everyone to grow as learners in head and heart. Together, we will continue creating the very best #ClaytonExperience for every student, every family and every member of our staff. Thank you for trusting me. Thank you for believing in me. Thank you for challenging me and supporting me. But most importantly, thank you for allowing me to lead and for allowing me to belong. The little girl who once walked into a bookstore on her birthdays and believed that somewhere inside those books was a bigger world could never have imagined this life. She could never have imagined coming to this country as a sixth grader and one day having the extraordinary honor of leading a school district as remarkable as Clayton. That little girl believed education could change a life. Mine certainly did. And I hope my time here has, in some way, helped open doors and create possibilities for others, too. Because of all of you, this chapter of my life has been more meaningful, more joyful and more beautiful than I could have ever imagined. With all my love and gratitude, Nisha Nisha Patel, EdD Superintendent
